چکیده

ABSTRACT The possibility to conduct new fieldwork projects in previously largely unexplored Iraqi Kurdistan during the past decade has reinvigorated research into transformative fifth third millennium BCE (Chalcolithic Early Bronze Age) southwest Asia when human societies grew from small, autonomous villages centralized states with urban centers. Major efforts synchronize stratigraphic sequences various sites order reach a consensus on archaeological periodization and identify absolute chronology of societal transformations necessarily focused available datasets Syria, Turkey, Iran. However, increased understanding differences communities’ adoption, adaptation, or rejection forms technologies social organization demands need for constructing region-specific chronological models comparative analysis. Such work is particularly challenging case where frequently have major hiatuses occupation. site Kani Shaie (Sulaymaniyah Governorate) offers rare opportunity investigate Chalcolithic Age uninterrupted sequence occupation ca. 5500 2500 BCE. This paper presents series fourteen radiocarbon dates, representing every period this timeframe, as first step toward construction regional chronology.

Southern Palestinian Chronology: Two Radiocarbon Dates for the Early Bronze Age at Tell El-hesi (israel)

Several articles reporting radiocarbon dates of Early Bronze Age (EB) material from excavations in the southern Levant have been published over the last 30 yr. The excavations conducted at Tell el-Hesi have produced material from which 2 additional 14C dates have been extracted to date. The 2 samples confirm the EB dating of Field VI material and suggest EB III settlement at Hesi might be earli...

Dating the Aegean Late Bronze Age with Radiocarbon*

When Cadogan wrote ‘Dating the Aegean Bronze Age without radiocarbon’ (1978), this writer agreed completely with the view that the absolute dating of the Aegean Late Bronze Age was already established. Correlations with Egypt and other parts of the eastern Mediterranean seemed secure, and virtually all Aegean prehistorians felt that radiocarbon dates could be ‘tested’ by comparison with the Aeg...

Archaeologically, eastern Iran is poorly known compared to the other regions of Iranian Plateau. Hence, there are many unanswered questions regarding the prehistoric chronological table of this region. The present knowledge of prehistoric cultures and chronology of Southeastern Iran is mostly through based on the 1960s archaeological excavations. In particular, the common chronology of the Chal...

Towards an Absolute Chronology for the Aegean Iron Age: New Radiocarbon Dates from Lefkandi, Kalapodi and Corinth

The relative chronology of the Aegean Iron Age is robust. It is based on minute stylistic changes in the Submycenaean, Protogeometric and Geometric styles and their sub-phases. Yet, the absolute chronology of the time-span between the final stages of Late Helladic IIIC in the late second millennium BCE and the archaic colonization of Italy and Sicily toward the end of the 8(th) century BCE lack...

Early atmospheric metal pollution provides evidence for Chalcolithic/Bronze Age mining and metallurgy in Southwestern Europe.

Although archaeological research suggests that mining/metallurgy already started in the Chalcolithic (3rd millennium BC), the earliest atmospheric metal pollution in SW Europe has thus far been dated to ~3500-3200 cal.yr. BP in paleo-environmental archives. A low intensity, non-extensive mining/metallurgy and the lack of appropriately located archives may be responsible for this mismatch. We ha...
